The University of Niigata Prefecture (UNP) is pleased to invite UPLB students to the International Joint Summer Seminar 2025 entitled Cities and Communities: Thriving Locally in a Global Age to be held in collaboration with the local municipalities of Niigata Prefecture on August 5-8, 2025.

About the Seminar

Many cities and communities worldwide are facing unprecedented challenges due to globalization. Opponents of globalization highlight its negative effects, such as depopulation, environmental degradation, job loss, increased income polarization, and the decline of traditional local industries due to foreign competition.

However, globalization also presents opportunities. Local and regional companies that can meet global standards and integrate effectively into global economic networks may sustain their competitive advantages. Cities and communities that successfully link their enterprises to the global economy have a higher likelihood of long-term sustainability.

This international summer seminar focuses on sustainable regional and local development in a globalized world. It offers students a unique opportunity to explore Niigata Prefecture’s culture, traditions, and industries, while engaging in intercultural exchange with UNP students and local communities.

• Special Lectures: Discussions on sustainable development and globalization challenges.
• Field Trips: Visit to Tsubame-Sanjyo, renowned for its industrial landscape.
• Group Work: Collaborative brainstorming on regional development solutions.
• Cultural Exchange: Activities to enhance intercultural understanding.

Covered by UNP:

• Transportation within the program
• Field trips and cultural exchange activities
• Accommodation (August 4-8, 2025) for participants from outside Niigata

To be covered by participants:

• Travel expenses to and from Niigata
• Meals during the program

Eligibility

Open to UPLB students who will not graduate by August 2025.
