The UPLB Office of International Linkages (OIL) recently welcomed participants to the Higher Education Leadership and Mentoring Fellowship Program (HELMFP), an initiative spearheaded by the Office for Institutional Development in Higher Education (OIDHE).
The program, which began on September 16, 2024, and runs until November 30, 2024, offers fellows from other Philippine higher education institutions the opportunity to gain firsthand experience of UPLB’s innovative practices and strategies in higher education.
Among the first cohort of 25 fellows, UPLB OIL hosted Dr. Virgo Clemente Lopez, vice president for academics of Panpacific University in Urdaneta, Pangasinan, on September 18.
This was followed by Director Edwin Puhagan of Tawi-Tawi Regional Agricultural College and Director Vivian Peligro of Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology who were both hosted by OIL on September 25 and October 1.
UPLB OIL Director Anna Floresca F. Firmalino provided each of the fellows with an in-depth overview of the office’s mandates, functions, and ongoing activities.
Dr. Lopez was hosted by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), while Directors Puhagan and Peligro were hosted by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE).
From October 9 to 14, UPLB OIL also hosted fellows Dr. Romiro G. Bautista, international relations officer of Quirino State University and Dr. Meriam F. Sulit, director of the International Relations Office of Bulacan Agricultural State College.
They participated in sessions that gave them deeper insights into UPLB's internationalization initiatives.
Both fellows delivered their exit presentations on October 14 where they shared their key learnings and experiences from the HELMFP.
Their university presidents, Dr. Hermenegildo Samoy, Jr. of Quirino State University and Dr. Jameson Tan of Bulacan Agricultural State College attended their presentations virtually.
In their presentations, Dr. Bautista and Director Sulit highlighted the following key insights: 1. Advancing Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 17): The program’s vital role in fostering partnerships, promoting internationalization, and enhancing mobility; 2. Adoption of best practices: The implementation of new committees and revisions to manuals and guidelines for internationalization efforts; 3. Enhanced capacity building: Strengthened institutional support to enhance capacity-building initiatives; and 4. Policy development: The creation of new policies and procedures as part of six-month re-entry plans to further internationalization initiatives.
The UPLB HELMFP aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and best practices with UPLB’s various offices, enabling participants to apply valuable insights to their own institutions.
This ongoing initiative highlights UPLB’s commitment to advancing leadership in higher education and strengthening its global partnerships through internationalization. (Maria Dominique C. Velasco)
