UPLB faculty and staff attended the Stipendium Hungaricum virtual orientation session organized by the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA (Doctor in Language Arts) Candidates (DOSZ) and the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program in partnership with UPLB on Sept. 12.

The orientation meeting aimed to introduce UPLB faculty members to PhD opportunities in Hungary under the scholarship program established by the Hungarian Government to “promote the internationalization of the Hungarian higher education and attract top foreign students from all around the world who can establish personal professional attachments to Hungary while enjoying high-quality education in the heart of Europe.”

The scholarship program is managed by the Philippine Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and with priority areas in agriculture and sustainable development, medicine, water management engineering and hydrology, architecture, protection of cultural heritage, natural sciences, and environmental studies.

Norbert Bencze, a board member of the DOSZ ambassador system, delivered the welcome remarks, while Joseph Yap, the ambassador representing Filipino scholars in DOSZ, introduced Diosdado Lopega and Dr. Dianne Joy Aguilon as speakers. The two shared with the audience their experiences as students in Hungary.

Lopega is a faculty member at UPLB’s Department of Social Sciences who is pursuing a PhD in political science focusing on migration and the legislative process at the Corvinus University of Budapest. He emphasized the importance of being open, enjoying mobility under the program, and traveling while undertaking their studies.

Dr. Aguilon, assistant professor at UPLB’s Department of Forest Biological Sciences, graduated with a PhD in Environmental Science: Conservation Ecology and Entomology at the University of Szeged.

She advised the participants on four important things to keep in mind while studying abroad: building relationships, thinking that nothing is impossible if one wants it, communicating, and building a timeline.

Dr. Tonette P. Laude, assistant director of the Office of International Linkages (OIL), delivered the closing message on behalf of OIL Director Anna Floresca F. Firmalino. Dr. Laude noted that the study program was a good opportunity and advised the audience to gain as much knowledge and training as possible during their study program. She said that part of the application process was the commitment to cascade the learnings they have gained to their respective disciplines.

Dr. Laude also advised the participants to learn from the current scholars and take advantage of the opportunity to explore new cultures and experiences. She enjoined the current and future scholars to build relationships, to commit to a timeline to finish their studies, and to represent the country well for the university to get more scholarship slots. She also said that being a student in Hungary is an opportunity to promote UPLB and the Philippines abroad. (MDCVelasco)
